What is a Licensed Insolvency Trustee?

A Licensed Insolvency Trustee (LIT) is a professional licensed by the Office of the Superintendent of Bankruptcy to help people who are having trouble getting out of debt. An LIT can give useful advice on all aspects of debt solutions such as budgeting and debt consolidation.

A LIT is the only professional who can provide services like consumer proposals and bankruptcies, which may be the best solution for people who are struggling with severe financial difficulty.

Licensed LITs must go through extensive education, training, and licensing exams, to offer the most effective solutions to clients. Our ongoing education and certification is government regulated, to ensure that you are getting the most knowledgeable and qualified professionals on your case.

Identifying a Licensed Insolvency Trustee

LITs are regulated by the office of the superintendent of Bankruptcy and must comply with federal laws and guidelines. This regulation ensures that they operate with transparency and integrity, Creating a legal and secure path to debt relief. Unlicensed practitioners do not offer this level of protection and can put you at risk for fraud or other legal complications that may lead to even more financial stress.

It's crucial to differentiate a Licensed Insolvency Trustee (LIT) from a non-profit credit counselor, a debt consultant, or a financial coach. While non-profit credit counselors are certified professionals who can assist in creating a debt management plan, they aren't authorized to negotiate agreements that allow individuals to pay less than what they owe, such as suggesting a Consumer Proposal or Bankruptcy.

Furthermore, debt consultants operate without licenses or regulations, meaning their fees are not standardized. Before entering into any agreement, it's important to fully understand the terms and conditions and how their services may or may not benefit you.
